The Loyal Dog
Yesterday I wasn't well, and my little dog, Frodo, was fully aware of my convalescence. He repeatedly brought me his favorite toy of the moment, a small, soft football. Not for his sake, because he didn't want me to throw it; but for mine, a comfort toy. For long moments he sits and stares, his warm, brown eyes filled with concern. A cough or sneeze sends him running back to assess the situation again. For once, he doesn't play rough with the kitten, even though she is desperately trying to get his attention. He leaves her alone. My dog is keeping a vigil and wants nothing to disturb him.
